| 7/21/10 Losing My MindI woke up this morning and couldn't recall having dinner last night. No evidence in the kitchen. I'm thinking I ought to eat something. Elizabeth WarrenFor Prez 2012. Michael BubleThe most singable song ever written. Mrs Costello Joao Gilberto & Caetano VelosoCaetano is the most handsome man in the world. Joao Gilberto & Caetano Veloso Eliane Elias 40 Shades Of GreenDay 2: Hotel Mom told me there was an Emo station 5000 meters down the road where I could get my tire repaired while I waited. Young dewd said pick it up before 6pm and as I was hungry I left the tire and parked back at the hotel. Irish do walk a lot so I decided to trek down to the Old Town. Got lost twice but eventually found my way. Who says men can't ask for directions. Also exercise is good for me. So I trudge on. Downtown is very quaint, European. Sun burned German hits me up for 2 Euros. I say I don't have 2 Euros, sorry. He says, "That's OK." Excellent Cappuccino and Pane Chocolate, 5 Euros. Lots of pubs. Arts Festival all week. Missed Brad Meldau yesterday. Hopped a cab back and he took me the scenic Bay route which was lovely. Why did my Mama's folks ever leave this place? Necessity, I'm thinking. Cabbie explained the "Irish Thing" about no street signs. I tell him of my O'Brien and McLaughlin ancestry and he points out a pharmacy that is run by O'Briens. I tip him generously. Back to Emo (Mood appropriate) dewd says it's blown, can't be repaired. How much? $65 Euros. Do the fucker. Irish are so matter of fact and efficient I tip the guy well. Euros are play money. 10 minutes and Im out of there. Snagged the last parking spot. Back to hotel for a nappy, logon to see what's going on in the world. Drive downtown for dinner, park in a lot and wander around until I find a fish pub. Good, not great Flounder, rice. OK. Back at the lot, someone has graciously scraped the left side of my Thrifty Mobile and torn off the left mirror. I gotta say FUCK. On the positive side: Ireland is incredibly civilized. People smile and service industry people don't seem to mind their jobs. No litter and the population of Galway seems quite affluent. Everyone uses re-usable shopping bags, the hallway lights go out when no one is in the hall. Imagine any city in the USA where the lights go out at night. Seriously bummed now, I can't imagine coping with Dublin. I start planning my get away; try to change my flight at delta.com and the site tells me I can. I can't. There is a bug in the program. Try the 800 number in Ireland and they say I have to call the US 800 number. I try but they don't want to talk to me. Knowing I'm gonna crack and start sampling some of that Jameson in the pub, I determine I have to return to the airport and deal with a real person. Next morning, coffee and blueberry muffin, I bid farewell to the bearded Pop and hit the road. I arrive at 1:05. The desk closed for the day at 1pm. Of course. Why didn't I know that? Found a reasonable hotel, beautiful slim blonde at the desk. "You Italian?" I ask. "Polish," she says. Ah yes. Even better. Shannon is an odd town, basically one shopping center in one building. I ask if there is an old part of town (with some character). "Nope. Just an airport town." The Chinese restaurant in Hotel also serves the Pub food. I try for Chinese, twice. Two of the worst meals I've ever had; both with the flavor of that canned chow mein we used to try in art school. Been watching the British Open off and on. Ireland love their young countryman, Rory McElroy, who set a record with a 63 opening round. Back to the airport. It's immediately clear, I'm screwed. Today? Nope. Tomorrow? Nope. Monday? OK. How much? $330. "Maybe you should try Aer Lingus or Continental." Aer Lingus. Yes, to Newark. How much? $660. Continental? Yes. $1000. Delta it is. I settle in to watch the British Open and surf the World Wide Web. Remember the Information SuperHighway? Anxious about returning the car and how much it's gonna cost me. At this point I don't give a damn. I just want them to let me go home. I check my Apple stock and it has gone up enough to cover the whole damn misadventure. I'm never going anywhere again.

Go HERE. 40 Shades Of GreenDay 1: As warned I got there early. Left my Visa at the e-ticket kiosk and got in to the huge security line. Freak 1. 2 ladies held my place. Whew. It was sitting there. Back in line for at least 45 minutes. Gate 4. An hour later it was gate 10. An hour later gate 22. On board we sit on the runway for an hour and the pilot says we're 15th in line for take-off. Chicken in ketchup sauce. Seat-back TVs don't work, can't sleep. This is where I realize how ill-equiped I am for this endeavor. Shannon. Thifty, it seems, only serves up stick-shifts. Can I change? Sure. $250 Euros. No thanks. Also seems, they force you to buy insurance unless you have a Canadian MasterCard. OK. fuck it. On the road gingerly trying to learn left-hand driving, shifting left-handed too. Who thought of this? Most people are right-handed. Probably some damn King. Heading for the Cliffs of Moorer on narrow country roads, beautiful stone walls everywhere, a lorry forces me too far left, I hit something, KPOW. Fucking blow-out. Haven't changed a tire in 50 years. Open the package and there is one of those weeny spares that says don't go more than 89km on this tire. Finally figure out how to use the jack, forget to loosen the lugs so I crank it down enough to loosen lugs. They don't budge. Oh yeah, I remember to use my feet and my weight. Up again. Long story short, recalling my father died changing a tire... It starts to sprinkle heavily... I get it done. Wash my dirty hands on the wet grass. And on to The Cliffs. Catch a glimpse and decide I really ought to get some sleep. Stupidly decide to take country road to Galway. Didn't sound too far. It was too far. Galway is large and busy and fast with roundabouts everywhere, bad maps, no street signs. "It's an Irish thing." I'm told. Panic! I've lost the name of the Hotel. Anno Santo? Santo Anno? Street name? I remember it's across from a grassy field. Stop for direction. 3 people stop what they're doing to help me. One guy on line says, "Anno Santo, it's on Threadneedle Rd." Go down here take a right and another.... I forget immediately. Get in the car, a nice old geezer tells me to wait, he knows the shortest way. I take his left and left advice. Problem is, as I said, no street signs. It's an Irish thing. I went too far, obviously, turn around and try again. There it is on the left. 4 parking slots. One open. Nice little mom and pop with WiFi. Go online to see what's going on in the world. It gets worse. I hate not being in control...

| 7/19/10 TodayBack from Ireland and happy to be. (No fault of Ireland, a lovely place and people.) I used to know something about making decisions but I forgot I knew it. Now I've learned it again: If you have trouble deciding something, don't do it. More about this to come.

| 7/12/10 I Know It's Not Right...but I do it anyway. I have a new game I play: When I walk out the door, I count the number of people I see until the 1st obese one.
