Slumdog Millionaire I was prepared to really like this movie, mainly because it seemed so unlike all the other films out there. Instead I found it nearly incomprehensible, contrived, and with a rather sappy feel good ending. Try again. Aaron liked it better than I did. Poor Aaron The kid is on his way back to Minneapolis. We checked the weather before he left: Minus 10 degrees F. Gives me the shivers just to think I used to live in that town for 6 years. Geoduck & Crowbar When I was a kid, we used to love Ma & Pa Kettle movies because they were a huge family run by Ma who looked a lot like our Ma. There were two lay-about Indian characters named Geoduck & Crowbar. Never knew what Geoduck stood for until recently watching Top Chef & Iron Chef. Turns out it is a sort of obscene phallic clam. 	12/30/08 Latest Painting Don't actually remember when I did this one but just framed it today. Family Dinner My 4 children and I all together for the first time in 4 years, had dinner at Landmarc last night. We've eaten there a few times before and it is usually excellent. This time everyone was pleased except me. I had a nice piece of seared cod which was good but the sauce was almost inedible. The calamari appetizer was delicious. Then the girls all split off with their various posses while Aaron and I went home to watch The Wrestler. Brutal, sad and ends bad for everyone. Can't see it winning many awards though the acting was excellent. And Marisa Tomei is gorgeous and naked a lot. Then to bed where I lay awake until about 6:30am. Probably should not have had that espresso with that medley of dessert. Aaron leaves tomorrow, Gretchen leaves on the 3rd. Kate leaves on the 4th and Sparkler goes back to school on the 5th. 	12/26/08 iTunes As I said, my new large hard drive allows me to load a huge new selection. I am thus getting into a bunch of Miles that I haven't listen to much before. Particularly the Gil Evans stuff and also The Musings Of Miles which has some really nice ballads such as Will You Still Be Mine?. The Musings of Miles Eartha Kitt, 81, RIP Eartha. More Cash Gretchen gifted me a 2-DVD set of the Johnny Cash TV show of 1969-71 and I've got to say it is awesome. Many of my musical heroes: George Jones, Pete Seeger, Louis Armstrong, James Taylor, Tammy Wynette, Linda Ronstadt... And that's just the 1st disk. 	12/23/08 Festivus Left to my own devices, I don't have a Christmas Tree. My first wife and I usually spent Xmas with her parents so they had one. Then I had a Jewish girlfriend who insisted we needed one since she'd always felt deprived, so I allowed her to buy and decorate one. My second wife had the habit so we had one each year for 18-19 years. I insisted the time span was 12-15 to 1-1 and out the door and vacuum up the needles. Now she lives around the block and has her own. I have my own Festivus assemblage of dried out hunks of wood as seen above. It works for me. Wish I'd Been There What a jam! Go HERE. Satch!! 	12/22/08 Bitter Cold Went out for my daily shop and was personally insulted by the 25 degree, windy weather despite the sunshine. Almost turned back after one block but pushed on and managed to actually make it to Chambers street to buy a new platter and then back home without stopping for a rest. Too damn cold to sit down even if I needed to do so. I don't get (and never have gotten) the need for winter. To paraphrase Rev. Wright... "Not God Bless the seasons, God damn winter." 	12/17/08 Painting, The Process It is easy (almost too easy) to start a new painting, it goes well, all looks good. Then it seems everything is wrong and it will fail to be resolved. This is the time to step back and say, "Hey, I've made hundreds of these things before and have only, ever, thrown out a few. Lighten up. It's not so important that another bad painting be made. Others will do that for you. Your job is to do another good one with a bit of a kick to it." And so it is with the one I'm looking at this moment. It's a silly painting, way out of line... facile, always a bad thing. But I will finish it, soon. And you will like it. At least those of you who like me or my paintings. Happy Holidays.
