What really disappoints me is that Cheney (even more than Bush) is escaping punishment. But I suppose he has to live with hmself and that's always the worst part of this life.
Quote Of The Day
"I just think the way he operated after September 11 was that he had this sort of this West Texas sheriff attitude, like, 'I can stand up to all the bad guys myself. Everyone else go back to their homes.' Whoever was giving advice on the war and on economic policy, it was bad, but he made the decisions ultimately. He made the mistakes. You can't put it on anyone else."

Backwards Bush
He's so out of here and it's quite certain that he will not try to pull off a coup d'etat. Plus I'm pretty certain that I was wrong about him trying to pardon himself; he and Cheney are too dumb and they really do believe they've done nothing wrong.
Thus I'm taking down that irritating little counter up there @ 4+ days. Good riddance. I may actually watch his swan song tonight just for laughs though I'm sure Jon Stewart will take him apart tomorrow.

He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven

Had I the heaven's embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.

"I think media should be abolished from, you know, reporting. You know, war is hell. And if you're gonna sit there and say, 'well, look at this atrocity,' well you don't know the whole story behind it half the time, so I think the media should have no business in it."

I've been reading Mikal Gilmore's book Stories Done which contains an essay on the Bros. So with my new huge hardrive I was able to load on more. My fave is actually Gregg's Laid Back but I also have Eat A Peach with a 31 minute long Mountain Jam. This is what I am recommending. It is to r&r what Love Supreme is to jazz. Go there.

Silly Old Man
Why is Hugh Hefner in the news so much these days. I suppose I could read some of the daily items but I'm really not that interested. I'll just assume he's got a book on the shelves.
After the Obama win, I find all sorts of stuff that doesn't interest me anymore: For instance anything to do with the wingnuts O'Reily, Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity, Palin, McCain, Hume, etc. If they would put Cheney in jail my interest would be piqued.
Cyrano de Bergerac
Tried to watch one of my fave plays last night. Kevin Kline was excellent as Cyrano, as usual, but the remaining cast was either mediochre or, in the case of Jennifer Garner as Roxanne, perfectly awful. Even her dimples couldn't save this production. I've seen the Jose Ferrer version (the best), George C. Scott, Steve Martin's Roxanne, and all were great. But Kline couldn't save this one; I had to turn it off.

Every day I toss and turn resisting the need to get up, left side, right side, even my stomach where I'm never able to sleep. The morning ritual is so boring: Check my blood sugar and chart it, take my insulin and meds, do the toilet thing, make some cappuchino and toast or cereal, log on and check the news... after that I just might go lay on the couch and try for a short nap. Eventually I have to get up and have a second cappuchino. That's where I am right now... nappy.

Quote Of The Day
"All nationalists have the power of not seeing resemblances between similar sets of facts. A British Tory will defend self-determination in Europe and oppose it in India with no feeling of inconsistency. Actions are held to be good or bad, not on their own merits, but according to who does them, and there is almost no kind of outrage -- torture, the use of hostages, forced labour, mass deportations, imprisonment without trial, forgery, assassination, the bombing of civilians -- which does not change its moral colour when it is committed by 'our' side ... The nationalist not only does not disapprove of atrocities committed by his own side, but he has a remarkable capacity for not even hearing about them."

Just Realized...
I forgot to start a new page at the New Year. Also, notice, 15 days left until Bush/Cheney will be gone.
Back To Normal?
As if. Now that the dread season is over, there is always a feeling of relief. Even though I do enjoy seeing my children and they all seem well into their own lives, it is always a lonely time of year for me. I've stopped trying to understand why this is so. It just does not seem real to me and even hypocritical. I'm not a Christian and stopped believing in Santa Claus a few years ago. And, worst of all I hate winter and don't understand why I never decided to live somewhere temperate.
Now I'm trying to plan some time in a warm clime and springtime in Spain. The problem is I'm not good at planning. Plus I've lost so much money in my retirement funds in the Bush era, it is hard to get started. I have to see my doctors, refill the dozen or so prescriptions, book flights. Oh bother!
Call it boredom. With myself, perhaps. None the less that is the partner with whom I will be traveling.

Last Night's Movie
Defiance with Daniel Craig & Liev Shreiber. Quite a good movie. Liev Schreiber is always excellent and the new James Bond proves himself to be an actor of substance as well. Rather a remake of Exodus with two brothers leading the fight in different manners; one fights back with weapons while the other fights passively. The tribe goes from having nothing, living in the woods, to managing to acquire an impressive arsenal. Food is scarce but vodka seems to be in abundance. Little details that often spoil such stories.

Pathetic
A CNN journalist heard about a very old Jewish man who had been going to the Western Wall to pray, twice a day, every day, for a long, long time. So she went to check it out. She went to the Western Wall and there he was, walking slowly up to the holy site. She watched him pray and after about 45 minutes, when he turned to leave, using a cane and moving very slowly, she approached him for an interview.
"Pardon me, sir, I'm from CNN. What's your name?"
"Morris Fishbien," he replied.
"Sir, how long have you been coming to the Western Wall and praying?"
"For about 60 years."
"60 years! That's amazing! What do you pray for?"
"I pray for peace between the Christians, Jews and the Muslims. I pray for all the wars and all the hatred to stop. I pray for all our children to grow up safely as responsible adults, and to love their fellow man."
"How do you feel after doing this for 60 years?"
"Like I'm talking to a fuckin' wall."

Last Night's Movie
I remember reading and liking this Richard Yates novel years ago. Couldn't remember anything about it so I gave it a try. Still don't recall the book but the movie is worth watching; Winslett is talented and gorgeous, as always and DiCaprio is always suprisingly good and good looking. But the wacked out character to watch out for is the mentally disturbed son of the real estate dealer. He's worth the price of the ticket.
Donald Westlake, 75, RIP
Go HERE. Was once a friend of a guy who used to be a friend of Westlake so I spent a few lunches and dinners with Don & Abby as they were called. One time this former friend and Westlake pit-roasted a pig up at his farm and it was devoured in Lord Of The Flies style. Awesome pig.
