The Day Lady Died

It is 12:20 in New York a Friday
three days after Bastille day, yes
it is 1959 and I go get a shoeshine
because I will get off the 4:19 in Easthampton
at 7:15 and then go straight to dinner
and I don't know the people who will feed me

I walk up the muggy street beginning to sun
and have a hamburger and a malted and buy
an ugly NEW WORLD WRITING to see what the poets
in Ghana are doing these days
I go on to the bank
and Miss Stillwagon (first name Linda I once heard)
doesn't even look up my balance for once in her life
and in the GOLDEN GRIFFIN I get a little Verlaine
for Patsy with drawings by Bonnard although I do
think of Hesiod, trans. Richmond Lattimore or
Brendan Behan's new play or Le Balcon or Les Nègres
of Genet, but I don't, I stick with Verlaine
after practically going to sleep with quandariness

and for Mike I just stroll into the PARK LANE
Liquor Store and ask for a bottle of Strega and
then I go back where I came from to 6th Avenue
and the tobacconist in the Ziegfeld Theatre and
casually ask for a carton of Gauloises and a carton
of Picayunes, and a NEW YORK POST with her face on it

and I am sweating a lot by now and thinking of
leaning on the john door in the 5 SPOT
while she whispered a song along the keyboard
to Mal Waldron and everyone and I stopped breathing

Leonard Cohen
Just got around to watching I'm Your Man last night and it settled nothing in my mind. I've always had a curious/dislike of Cohen. A friend gave me a copy of one of his CDs and I almost had to get rid of it. On the other hand this DVD was full of good to great musicians paying tribute that I had to give in. Teddy Thompson (son of Richard & Linda), Martha Wainright & Rufus (I prefer their dad), The McGarrigle sisters, Anthony (a sweet voice), Nick Cave (an odd duck), Bono (the pretentious) & Edge. Linda Thompson was advertised but I didn't see her featured.
I do like some of Cohen's songs: First, We Take Manhattan, Bird On A Wire, Tower Of Song, etc. but he cannot rock so he is no Dylan. Teddy does two great versions of Tonight Will Be Fine.

Sparkler's last year at Camp Oneka in Tafton, PA starts tomorrow for 7 weeks. I'll drive her up and miss her all the way back. But she is psyched to go for the whole season this summer. "Go Red."
She is at the stage where she mostly tolerates her "Padre" and thinks he's a bit dumb cuz he doesn't buy into the "shop till you drop" and female shoe fetish syndrome. Dumb for many more reasons as well. We do agree on Obama, however, so she will come around one day.

And Go HERE. You can find his famous 7 words routine on YouTube.

"The best afterlife for me would be to be able to sit comfortably and watch the world on a kind of heavenly CNN. To be able to have my remote and say, 'Okay, there's an uprising in Spain. Let's watch that. Or to watch China finally take over the fucking world. Because there's a billion of those motherfuckers and they're going to eat our lunch. I would love to get the thousand-year view on the decline of the European birthrate or the "Muslimization" of Europe that's talking place; the explosion of Latin American culture in the western part of the United States.' Just sit back and watch. India and Pakistan, both, have nuclear weapons and they fuckin' hate each other. I'm telling you, somebody is going to fuck somebody's sister and an atom bomb is going to fly. And I say fine. You know? I just like the show. This world is a big theater in the round, as far as I'm concerned, and I'd just love watching it spin itself into oblivion. Tune in and watch the human adventure. It's a cursed, doomed species but it's just interesting as hell. That's what I want heaven to be. And if it's not like that, then fuck it. I'll just kill myself."
-- George Carlin
"It's a wonderful feeling to have found something you're good at, that you love to do, and that other people think you do well. Those are the three elements, I think, that go into being happy: Find something you love, be good at it, and have other people pat you on the back and say "good job."

McCain's Last Chance...
for his own war.
"I wanted to be a fighter pilot [as a kid]. In my generation and generations even after, the fighter pilot was the epitome, in many ways, of the tradition of the knight out there - one person in combat with the other. The Red Baron. Frank Luke of Arizona, from [whom] Luke Air Force Base is named. Eddie Rickenbacker. All those great [fighter pilots]. Pappy Boyington. I don't know if you ever heard the story about Pappy Boyington. They all drank a fair amount, and he was in Guadalcanal, and he fell and broke his leg. And he flew using a cane to move the rudder pedals. And he just had them lift him in, put him into the cockpit. Away he went. Now, the nature of warfare has changed a lot. It seems to me from visiting at the Naval Academy and some of these other young people, now it's the Special Forces guy, the SEALs, these guys that are running around at night and parachuting into places ‹ or being dropped by helicopter, more likely ‹ into places in Afghanistan and going after the Taliban and the bad guys. It seems those are, in some ways, replacing the fighter pilot in the most admired category by adventuresome young Americans, both men and women.

The Smile Train (repeat)

I'm sure you've seen those contribution ad's for children with cleft-lip and cleft palate. I saw one just yesterday and said to myself, do it. Today I got a solicitation in the mail as it was tweaking me. Heart-breaking but if you manage to read the ad you realize for only $250 you can help one of those children. My late brother Joe had a minor cleft lip repaired and later disguised with a mustache, so in his memory I bought one for someone. Most of us can easily afford a tax deductible $250. Go HERE.
Update: I've decided that instead of donating to the obscenity of political campaigns, I'd use my tax rebate for this fund.

Tiger!
Blogging has been taking a second seat to the U.S.Open for the last two days. I don't play golf and only watch it when Tiger Woods is playing. Yesterday he came from behind, with a bad knee, to tie Rocco Mediate, 45, who was shooting for his first major tournament, on the 18th and final hole. That took it into an 18 hole playoff which also ended in a tie. That sent it into a sudden death playoff and Tiger won on the first hole. I had mixed feelings; hoping Rocco might pull it off. At the same time I always root for Tiger the way I always rooted for Agassi and Sampras and McEnroe.
Non-contact sports are the only ones I watch.

Aubade

I work all day, and get half-drunk at night.
Waking at four to soundless dark, I stare.
In time the curtain-edges will grow light.
Till then I see what's really always there:
Unresting death, a whole day nearer now,
Making all thought impossible but how
And where and when I shall myself die.
Arid interrogation: yet the dread
Of dying, and being dead,
Flashes afresh to hold and horrify.
The mind blanks at the glare. Not in remorse
- The good not done, the love not given, time
Torn off unused - nor wretchedly because
An only life can take so long to climb
Clear of its wrong beginnings, and may never;
But at the total emptiness for ever,
The sure extinction that we travel to
And shall be lost in always. Not to be here,
Not to be anywhere,
And soon; nothing more terrible, nothing more true.

Go HERE for the complete poem.

Remember The Good Old Days?
I bought 2 used bowling shirts for 25 cents each back in the day (1970s) in St. Louis. Nice shirts, one was peach colored and I gave it to my student-friend, Bob (The Cakeman) Irish. The other was cobalt blue with yellow lettering, with the embroidered name Bob Tomlin. Bob on the front, Tomlin on the back shoulder. I wore the blue one for years until my girth expanded and couldn't button it anymore. I gave it to Kate years ago and forgot all about it.
Tonight she walked out to see some art in Chelsea wearing the shirt and I was so tickled. That is one of the things that makes being a father so much fun. Plus 25 cents used to go a long way. Still does I guess.

Quote Of The Day
"To hold that the political branches may switch the Constitution on and off at will would lead to a regime in which they, not this Court, say "what the law is... Security subsists, too, in fidelity to freedom's first principles. Chief among these are freedom from arbitrary and unlawful restraint and the personal liberty that is secured by adherence to the separation of powers... Within the Constitution's separation-of-powers structure, few exercises of judicial power are as legitimate or as necessary as the responsibility to hear challenges to the authority of the Executive to imprison a person."

MoveOn

Cottage Cheese, etc.
I grew up eating and loving cottage cheese on potatoes but seldom by itself. My mother added it to Lime Jell-o but it didn't go down that well with any of us. My children have acquired my same taste and in fact insist potatoes without cottage cheese is less than satisfying. They will also pour gravy over both and lap it up.
By mistake, one day, I bought a container of cottage cheese with pineapple and no one would touch it. I tried a bite or two and thought it "not terrible" though not on mashed potatoes. It grew moldy and eventually landed in the garbage. I recall Nixon's habitual lunch was cottage cheese with ketchup and Reagan insisted that ketchup on school lunch menus qualified as a vegetable.
The other day I made the same mistake, bought pineapple Cottage cheese, and decided I would try it. It has now begun to grow on me. I'm thinking of trying the orange flavor next.

Obama 2008
I hope so. I've contributed some primary money to Barack so I get daily email hits for more.
I volunteered to work for him in NY so I get more than one daily email hit from him.
I replied to the latest post Hillary plea with a message stating that I will gladly contribute my impending tax rebate to Obama if I have an assurance that it will not be re-directed to help pay off Hillary's debt.
No response to that message but I am now getting thrice daily email solicitations to again donate. I know how solicitation campaigns work but I'm not a fool.
Hillary is about 20 mil in debt, spent mostly tyrannizing Obama and mostly loaned to herself from book royalies and Bill's outrageous speaking fees. She must have thought it was a good investment. Think again Billary.
Mitt Romney takes the prize @ about 44 mil in debt; again mostly loans he made to himself. Ditto sympathy there. He will no doubt be McCain's pick for Veep so all is well across the aisle. I don't care what they do. Thay will do as they have always done. Screw you.
Message to Obama: Grass Roots grow and spread laterally. As soon as I receive assurance that you will not be paying for your opponents' debts, I will cut another check. We love you back.

Addendum: I remember the depressing day when OJ got acquitted; I walked out on the streets of NYC and had to witness cars full of young blacks screaming and applauding what every thinking person on the globe knew to be a huge travesty of justice.
Now I walk the street expecting to see a mass of Obama buttons on the shirts and back-packs of young blacks. There is no there there. Not a whiff of recognition of what is going on. I think the suffocating lack of opportunity for young blacks is deeper than I ever imagined.

Advice To Obama
Don't pick a sitting Senator for Veep. You need as many secure seats as you can so you can dump Lieberman hard and often. Look to early retired Dems like Daschle, Bradley and Edwards to fill out your cabinet. Even Hagle would be better. Richardson would be good. And don't pick those nobody Hillary supporters like Bayh or Rendell who have been running against you all these months. Sam Nunn is dead isn't he? Hope so. Can't understand why Carter would even mention the guy.
Anyhow, that's a start. Save the Senate and build on that.

Billary gets one last chance to bask. At least I'm hoping it's her last. And of course she is keeping everone waiting while she picks the correct pants suit. Bill will be there beaming as if she won. And of course she will try to claim one last time that she won the most votes of anyone in history. That's her story. History will show that it was her race to lose and she lost it.
Well the motorcade has left home about a half hour late. So, I predict it will be about 10 minutes then about 15 minutes of applause and adulation, then the last hurrah.
Don't ask me why I'm following all this. But as it turned out she gave a very decent speech.
And whuzzup with Bill's pink face? Has it always been that color?

Reminder: Running tomorrow for Triple Crown - 6:30 ET
The only time I watch horse racing is when they have the hype of Triple Crown.
In other Sports News: On Sunday it is Federer v. Nadal for the French Open. Nadal is the fave and heading for his 4th straight to match Bjorn Borg's record. Thing is Borg also went on to win Wimbeldon a few times as has Federer who has yet to win the French. Great match coming up.

The McCain Straight Talk
It was pathetic hearing McCain, who supported Bush 95% of the time in the past year, trying to distance himself:
"I disagreed strongly with the Bush administration's mismanagement of the war in Iraq."
Which is quite different than what he had to say last month:
"No one has supported President Bush on Iraq more than I have."

Chinese Food
Nothing better than Chinese when it's good. Nothing worse when it's bad. Last night I had a craving and ordered from a new place down the block. Won Ton soup, fried shrimp dumplings and Mu Shu Shrimp. Well, the won tons were thick and under cooked. The fried dumplings were barely boiled, not fried and the duck sauce was salty. Mu shu shrimp was not good. I usually have enough left over for lunch the next day but today I'm not so sure I'll eat it.

One Last Day In The Sun
Just got an email from Hillary saying she's gonna announce on Saturday that she finally supports Obama. Let's hope it rains on her last parade.
The more I think about it the more pissed I get. Everyone else merely makes a statement of concession and congratulations. Not Billary, they have to put on a show. Let's hope Obama has the good sense to avoid the spectacle.

I've now heard Donna Brazile tell two different interviewers, "You're not my boo." The latest was to Anderson Cooper, who we all know is gay. He seemed to not understand the term. He said, "But I want to be your boo, Donna." A good laugh was had by all on the panel.

I Still Say
As much as I admire the Kennedys and wish Teddy well in his recovery, I still blame him for Carter's defeat in 1980. Teddy and the Democrats sabotaged Carter and if they hadn't we may never have had to suffer Reagan/Bush in the first place. And so on...

This Iraq War
At this point the Iraq War (except for those being killed or maimed over there) is only being fought within the USA. All Iraqis and the rest of the world think we whould get the hell out of there. We just thave to convince 51% of the electorate to vote for the end of it.

Cheap Talk
Billary supporters like to threaten they won't support Barack if Billary is snubbed. Think again. What happens to those of us who could never vote for Hillary under any circumstances. And those of us who would have to stiffle some vomit if Barack should foolishly choose her for Veep.
Here is a Hillary zealot.

Soft Shell Crabs
Had my first of the season last night, sauteed with flour, s&p, in butter & lemon juice. Served with a few cherry tomatoes. So good I think I'll go get more for tonight.

I Am Neurotic
Compare and submit your own. Go HERE.

MacDries says, "Frankly most of these are mere quirks. I'd save the term neurotic for behavior that does harm to oneself or others."
Quote Of The Day
"We all misspeak sometimes. I've done it myself. So on such a basic, factual error, you'd think that Senator McCain would just admit that he made a mistake and move on. But he couldn't do that. Instead, he dug in. And the disturbing thing is that we've seen this movie before -- a leader who pursues the wrong course, who is unwilling to change course, who ignores the evidence. Now, just like George Bush, John McCain refused to admit that he made a mistake. And that's exactly the kind of leadership that we've had through more than five years of fighting a war that should've never been authorized, and should've never been waged.
We don't need more leaders who can't admit they've made a mistake, even when it's about something as fundamental as how many young Americans are serving in harm's way."
