I have gotten into Merton at certain times in my life. Never very deeply due to the fact that I've always had other things to do. And there is a terrifying edge to his writings and practices that keeps me at bay. he is not funny like Baba Ram Dass, nor clever like Alan Watts, nor erudite like Suzuki. He is not shaman, nor charlatan, like Castenada. Nor is he deep like deChardin. Go HERE to open the door to the cutting edge between the Trappist, the Jesuit, the Zen Buddhist.

Pete?
Was lying awake (sort-of) last night or the night before and began composing and editing an introductory paragraph about this guy named Peter (Segal) who was always called Pete. His full name was Peter Joseph Segal and had graduated from Yale intending to go on to Harvard for an MBA but got stuck in a post-grad job with a publisher in NYC. He wanted to fullfill the old JFK adage that he had a Harvard education and a Yale degree. (Whatever that means to Ivy Leaguers.) He mused about why JFK could be John Fitzgerald, John, Jack and yet he was stuck with always being called "Pete".
He had tried to be Peter, P.J., P. Joseph but none of these would stick. He was always Pete. He felt a bit demeaned; had never understood why a President of the USA could allow himself to be called Jimmy.
... I had no idea where this story was going and it will probably never go anywhere other than this blog.

Brother Dennis turned me on to them. And I'm getting to the point where I can't take anymore new good music. It keeps coming. My kids keep turning me on to the new generation. At some point I have to start listening to those 12 CDs of Bill Evans' last recordings and some Wes Montgomery and Miles's later period and the same for Coltrane. Gretchen gave me a new box-set of Emmylou duets called Songbird. Never gave Chet Baker what he deserves as well. Not to mention Dave Brubeck and Paul Desmond. And Mingus. Dexter Gordon, Sonny Stitt. And Bob? I got a bunch of his I've never even tapped. The Bootleg Tapes?
I give up. And Carl is even worse than me. He collects DVDs.

Viva Roma
The former residence of Cardinal Bernardino Spada displays one of Rome's most delightful architectural follies, created by Francesco Borromini. The architect made a 30-foot long colonnade appear 120 feet by tilting the floor, walls and vaulted ceiling.
If you observe someone walking through this collonade, that person will appear to grow larger as he proceeds deeper. An 18 inch statue at the end appears to be full sized. Unfortunately when I was last in Rome and wanted my children to witness this illusion, no one was allowed to walk through. Borromini is dead and so is his art. That's progress.

Langston Hughes
Let America Be America Again

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed--
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

Say, who are you that mumbles in the dark?
And who are you that draws your veil across the stars?

I am the poor white, fooled and pushed apart,
I am the Negro bearing slavery's scars.
I am the red man driven from the land,
I am the immigrant clutching the hope I seek--
And finding only the same old stupid plan
Of dog eat dog, of mighty crush the weak.

I am the young man, full of strength and hope,
Tangled in that ancient endless chain
Of profit, power, gain, of grab the land!
Of grab the gold! Of grab the ways of satisfying need!
Of work the men! Of take the pay!
Of owning everything for one's own greed!

I am the farmer, bondsman to the soil.
I am the worker sold to the machine.
I am the Negro, servant to you all.
I am the people, humble, hungry, mean--
Hungry yet today despite the dream.
Beaten yet today--O, Pioneers!
I am the man who never got ahead,
The poorest worker bartered through the years.

Yet I'm the one who dreamt our basic dream
In the Old World while still a serf of kings,
Who dreamt a dream so strong, so brave, so true,
That even yet its mighty daring sings
In every brick and stone, in every furrow turned
That's made America the land it has become.
O, I'm the man who sailed those early seas
In search of what I meant to be my home--
For I'm the one who left dark Ireland's shore,
And Poland's plain, and England's grassy lea,
And torn from Black Africa's strand I came
To build a "homeland of the free."

The free?

Who said the free? Not me?
Surely not me? The millions on relief today?
The millions shot down when we strike?
The millions who have nothing for our pay?
For all the dreams we've dreamed
And all the songs we've sung
And all the hopes we've held
And all the flags we've hung,
The millions who have nothing for our pay--
Except the dream that's almost dead today.

O, let America be America again--
The land that never has been yet--
And yet must be--the land where every man is free.
The land that's mine--the poor man's, Indian's, Negro's, ME--
Who made America,
Whose sweat and blood, whose faith and pain,
Whose hand at the foundry, whose plow in the rain,
Must bring back our mighty dream again.

Sure, call me any ugly name you choose--
The steel of freedom does not stain.
From those who live like leeches on the people's lives,
We must take back our land again,
America!

O, yes,
I say it plain,
America never was America to me,
And yet I swear this oath--
America will be!

Out of the rack and ruin of our gangster death,
The rape and rot of graft, and stealth, and lies,
We, the people, must redeem
The land, the mines, the plants, the rivers.
The mountains and the endless plain--
All, all the stretch of these great green states--
And make America again!

William Butler Yeats (fer Christ's sake)
Easter 1916

I have met them at close of day
Coming with vivid faces
From counter or desk among grey
Eighteenth-century houses.
I have passed with a nod of the head
Or polite meaningless words,
Or have lingered awhile and said
Polite meaningless words,
And thought before I had done
Of a mocking tale or a gibe
To please a companion
Around the fire at the club,
Being certain that they and I
But lived where motley is worn:
All changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

That woman's days were spent
In ignorant good-will,
Her nights in argument
Until her voice grew shrill.
What voice more sweet than hers
When, young and beautiful,
She rode to harriers?
This man had kept a school
And rode our winged horse;
This other his helper and friend
Was coming into his force;
He might have won fame in the end,
So sensitive his nature seemed,
So daring and sweet his thought.
This other man I had dreamed
A drunken, vainglorious lout.
He had done most bitter wrong
To some who are near my heart,
Yet I number him in the song;
He, too, has resigned his part
In the casual comedy;
He, too, has been changed in his turn,
Transformed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

Hearts with one purpose alone
Through summer and winter seem
Enchanted to a stone
To trouble the living stream.
The horse that comes from the road.
The rider, the birds that range
From cloud to tumbling cloud,
Minute by minute they change;
A shadow of cloud on the stream
Changes minute by minute;
A horse-hoof slides on the brim,
And a horse plashes within it;
The long-legged moor-hens dive,
And hens to moor-cocks call;
Minute by minute they live:
The stone's in the midst of all.

Too long a sacrifice
Can make a stone of the heart.
O when may it suffice?
That is Heaven's part, our part
To murmur name upon name,
As a mother names her child
When sleep at last has come
On limbs that had run wild.
What is it but nightfall?
No, no, not night but death;
Was it needless death after all?
For England may keep faith
For all that is done and said.
We know their dream; enough
To know they dreamed and are dead;
And what if excess of love
Bewildered them till they died?
I write it out in a verse -
MacDonagh and MacBride
And Connolly and pearse
Now and in time to be,
Wherever green is worn,
Are changed, changed utterly:
A terrible beauty is born.

Dick Cavett Show
I was in the audience for this show. In 1969, just back from Rome, I walked past the cue for the show and noticed there were two doors open. I made a bold left turn and walked into the theatre and took a seat. No one challenged me, so I sat tight.
Now, with the mention of The Exorcist I realize it was in 74-75 and I was visiting NYC.

Maybe 9-10 parts.
Gustav Eckstein
One of my favorite writers wrote a wonderful book called The Body Has A Head and I've been reading it and re-reading it since I first saw him interviewed by Dick Cavett in the 70s. You might look it up. One of my fave lines:
"A female mink may display a proper unwillingness toward one male and be quite free with another. Inject atropine, which temporarily blinds her, and the female who has been hospitable to one male takes on all. Here eyes are out of focus and mink is mink. The discrimination of any female, we know, does go down with mink... Which could be brought to ions and atoms and molecules and endocrines, but why? Why so serious child? This is only The Carnaval! Come eat your cake."
And speaking of Descartes he has this to offer: "Rene Descartes in the seventeenth century thought the pineal, perched in the middle of the brain was the seat of the soul."

MacDries says, "What is it that you know in the seat of your soul?"

Racist America
I love all the right-wing pundits and MSM who are "shocked" that black people could be racsist too. As if they didn't even have a reason.
According to Jewish tradition, if your mother is Jewish, so is the child. This makes a bit of sense since the mother is usually certain which children are hers unless she was drunk during birth. The man needing proof will have to get some DNA tested.
If you are 1/2 black and your mama is white, you too are black. No test necessary. Witness Obama.

Quote Of The Day
"What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?
I answer: a day that reveals to him, more than all other days in the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim.
To him, your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty, an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your denunciation of tyrants, brass fronted impudence; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mockery; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are, to him, mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy -- a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages.
There is not a nation on the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of the United States, at this very hour."

New York Story
(Fred, you won't like this so don't read it.)
Everyone living in NYC has a similar story; it was even an episode on Seinfield.
You have a neighbor who considers themselves a dog lover. Evidence? They take the mutt for a walk or two daily and wipe their ass for them. Some even pick up the turd and dispose of it. Then in between walks they go off to work and leave their lovers at home alone.
The dog takes a quick nap and then proceeds to bark for hours and hours because it misses its Master/Mistress.
I have had this experience more than once in 28 years and currently have a new one since the block behind me has filled up with new tenants; yuppies, all of whom have dogs and most have baby carriages. I can't really blame the mutts. I blame the neurotics who "own" them.
The problem is locating the offenders and killing them.
Quote Of The Day
"How do we know Bush was not behind 9-11? Because it worked. And it involved planning."
-- Bill Maher, New Rules

I squandered my extra savings in bed today. I kept looking at the clock and rolling over, knowing it was really an hour earlier.

Wyoming
Obama wins caucuses 61-38. Swallow that Billary. And where is Bill these days.
I'm saying Obama should forget about Billary as Veep and look towards, Bradley, Daschle, Richardson. Plaenty more to choose from. No sense in giving up Senate seats.
Go HERE for Bradley.
Breaking The Rules
Gary Hart broke a few but never the ones Hillary is breaking. Go HERE.
Dylan Chronicles
Just finished re-reading Bob's Memoir and got interested in the CD Oh, Mercy which I had never really explored. Pretty damn good.

Prisoner Paintings
When I moved into my loft in 1979 I had 3 paintings measuring 65" x 65" which would not fit up the stairs. No problem since a couple windows in my loft were so broken they had to be removed. I hauled the paintings up with a rope and into the window. They have been shown and stored a few times since.
Now, as I occasionally start to think about moving (somewhere) I often lay awake thinking about how to get these 3 paintings down and out of here and into storage.
The landlord has since slightly rebuilt the stairs and it is possible they will now just barely fit. However, I have yet to test the hypothesis.
Gotta do it soon cuz these mid-morning musings are driving me crazy.
OK. I just tried and... they fit. They are no longer prisoners. Now maybe these damn mid-night musings will cease.

Can't Do It!
All my tax receipts are piled on my dinner table for over two months now. But I can't bring myself to go through them. Filing solo this year. Maybe that's it.
Also need to renew my passport. Maybe I'll just stay home for the duration.

One of those days. My Sparkler and I are both a little disappointed today. Will it be Hillary/Obama or Obama/Hillary.

Quotes Of The Day
"No society that feeds its children on tales of successful violence can expect them not to believe that violence in the end is rewarded."

"Nature can provide for the needs of people; [she] can't provide for the greed of people."

I just noticed that Fred managed to transfer some of his old 1/2" vcr tapes from back in the day when we had the 1st portable Sony 3400s. I just finally burned all my tapes when I moved my art back into the city. Didn't think they would even play. Fred's more resourceful than I am. Not that my tapes were really worth saving. Go HERE.

Question
It is said that "matter is neither created, nor destroyed". If that is so, where is all the extra weight coming from. People are clearly getting heavier.
Give Away
To all you entrepreneurs out there: Just as I had the idea for Starbucks in 1969 and failed to invent it, here is another idea. With the advent of all those health clubs all over the world it seems to me a lot of energy is going up in sweat. Why not hook all those devices up to a power grid and re-use it at least to light the gym; maybe more.

2nd Quote Of The Day
"One of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the great struggle for independence."
-- Charles A. Beard, historian (1874-1948)
Quote Of The Day
"We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate."

J.S. Bach
The record of the German side of my family peters out with a woman named Anna Magdelena Bach in the 16th century. Thus I have always harbored the belief that I am decended from J.S. Now we know more about what he looked like based on a skull cast and a single portrait which he sat for. Go HERE.

I'm thinking we will soon know who's (what's) gonna be our choice; a man against a woman, or black against white. Despite the position them Dems were in a year ago, it's gonna be as dicey as it comes.
