I Could Have Died Today
Smack down on 15th street and 10th avenue. I had the white pedestrian walk signal and didn't look. I heard a honk-honk and caught a rightward glimpse of a black SUV speeding toward me, honking, the pimp, drug-dealer on his cell phone wasn't slowing. I took a swift circle 180 toward Mario's Del Posto and managed to get back in time. My hit-man was still pedal to the metal heading towards the West Side Highway.
I'm still alive. Better luck next time all you assholes out there.
Obama's Big Muddy
Every day it becomes clearer to me that the Prez's plan to "win" the war in Afghanistan is mis-guided and will contribute to the downfall of the USA in the same way that it did to the USSR. My plan? Pull out of the whole area, stop supplying weapons to everyone, especially Israel, and if the UN decides action is needed, then let it be a united force. America has to stop thinking of itself as the world savior, the way we think we saved the world from the Nazis and the Nips. We didn't, the combined resistance did. It used to be called the Department of War, then the Department of Defense. Now it is essentially the Department of Offense.
Stop!

Political Porn
I have to admit that as dispicable as Republicanism is to me, I sorta enjoy it when Michelle Bachmann (great eyes) gets some coverage. Way hotter than the FLOTUS Michelle. Ditto when Dana Perino (total babe) was at the podium. Also Palin (sort of).
The Dems do have Granholm but she's not up to the level of Bachmann, Perino.

Cold Too Long
I think when you get old, cold creeps in and hangs on way too long. Spring is here and days are 40-50 degrees which used to be warm-ish. 50, these days, still seem cold to me.
What Passes For Humor
Found a PPV movie called Zack & Miri Make A Porno on my TiVo. I tried to watch it and got about 15 minutes into it before getting disgusted. Actually I was disgusted after 5 minutes, maybe even 2, but tried to weather it out. You could call it childish but children are usually quite cute. Seth Rogen, who is in every movie made today is not cute.

Breaking Bad
Started watching this series on cable. A real downer: A guy is dying of cancer, his wife is pregnant, so he and a young pal start cooking meth and get involved with a psycho junkie dealer who they wind up having to poison to get out from under his spell... It goes on, down and down.
Who thinks up these things.

Re-Thinking The Internet
As I mentioned earlier, I no longer click on anything that has that tiny video camera icon attached. You can count on seeing an ad before you get to see a news reader give you the lead in to another reader with the 10 second story.
The good thing about the internet as a news source is you can get a distilled account with out the blather on TV and you can also switch more quickly to a more interesting story. Like newspapers, you can skip whole sections at a time; such as weather, sports, classifieds. You can also switch quickly from NYTimes to CNBC or CNN. The internet would do well to emulate the TiVo model rather than TV. Nome sain?

Remember Michael Milkin?
Remember Junk Bonds? Remember the first Internet bubble, Netscape worth billions? Then Microsoft buried them. That's about the time that Wall Street went Reality Show instead of "show me the money" and I'll pay you your profit.
Then came those Hedge Funds that no one can quite comprehend but these are smart guys with a gambling instinct. And as we all know some gamblers do cheat. Remember ENRON? Some of those guys went to jail rich.
Now we hear about "derivitives" and "sub-prime loans" and "Ponsi Schemes". I say it's time for more jailtime.
Time for "I'll work for pay."

Caution
So, I had about $700 sitting in my Schwab cash account doing nothing, gathering no interest for a couple years. I noticed that CitiGroup was selling at $1.56 down from about $50 a few months ago. Not believing that Citi is going out of business I bought 400 shares last week. It's now up to $3.10. Even if I lose it, it feels good to get some of my money back from that damn bunch of thieves who took a big chunk out of my annuities.
Moondog
When I first lived in NYC there was this blind musician who stood on the corner of 53rd & 6TH avenue wearing a Viking hat and garb. He was know to have been friendly with the 52nd street jazz crowd (Charlie Parker, Diz, etc.) and was himself a composer and musician. I just downloaded one of his recordings (he recorded on Prestige and Columbia) and I have to say he is serious; somewhere between jazz and orchestral music. Check him out on Wikipedia.

They're still kicking gays out of the military. Go HERE .
When I was in graduate school in 1965, I had a friend named Wm. Schwedler who told me a story of going to draft board when he was called up for the Vietnam War draft. He said, "I told the guy I was gay and he said when was the last time I had sex. I said, last night. When did you"? He said, 'OK faggot you can go'. I said, "Thank you."
At that time I was not totally cognoscente or frankly interested in "the gay", so I said, "And he believed you?
Bill looked at me quizically, as if to say, "Doh!"
I can be quite oblivious at times.
Bill died of AIDS in 1982, one of the first in NYC who had "The Gay Cancer".

See Yesterday
When "Hagar the Horrible" cartoonist Chris Browne first visited Sioux Falls about three years ago, he went to an art gallery reception wearing his viking-horned helmet. That's when he met his artistic soul mate of sorts.
"I walked in one door and Carl Grupp walked in another, and we were both wearing viking helmets," Browne says as Grupp laughs at the memory. Augustana College's mascot is a helmet-wearing viking; Grupp was a long-time art professor there.
Browne and Grupp had a few cartoons in the Augie show that featured work by many other cartoonists, too. Soon the two were talking about their love of art, cartooning and drawing, and have since become friends. They teamed up at EastBank Art Gallery on Sunday to hang work in their joint show, "Double Visionaries."
You can meet the horned ones during a reception starting at 5 p.m. Friday at the 8th & Railroad Center, at 401 E. 8th St. Browne's comic strip appears in 1,800 newspapers world wide. He lived for 28 years in Sarasota, Fla., before moving to Sioux Falls two years ago. But his work isn't all cartoon vikings. In addition to "Hagar," Browne also has published other cartoons in many magazines, including a few for a mature audience in Playboy. A couple of these somewhat risque cartoons, which include the initials of publisher Hugh Heffner as Hef sent them off to the page layout people, are in the EastBank show. "I think I'll hang them up high, just in case there are youngsters here," Browne said Sunday, showing the drawings that feature nearly clothed cartoon women.
Most all artwork by Browne, 56, and Grupp, 69, is for sale. While Browne takes over the south wall, Grupp fills the north wall with original work from both past and present. He started teaching at Augustana in 1969, but also is a nationally known printmaker with works held in numerous prestigious collections, and is included in notable art publications. Grupp retired in 2004 but continues to produce artwork. "I've followed Chris's work for years, and work by his dad, cartoonist Dik Browne, who started 'Hagar,' 'Hi and Lois' and others," Grupp said. "I'm just tickled to have a show with Chris, but more so to be his friend."

Bono
OK, so Bono called Coldplay's Chris Martin a "wanker". I don't know the accuracy of the charge but both U2 & Coldplay do suck so it's a bit of pot calling kettle... Nome sain?

What in the hell is going on with Obama's disregard for Howard Dean. I'd be willing to bet it's Rahm Emanuel.
Also wondering why all the Progressive Blogs give so much attention to Rush, Jindahl, Coulter, O'Reilly and the other wingnuts. I say stop giving them publicity.
