Anemia
Spent the day reading up on anemia and comparing my last two blood reports. Result: Though it's slow paced, it seems mine is probably iron-deficiency from last year when I lost so much blood due to that damn esophageal tear. So I will go with popping iron supplments and eating more red meat than I really like. Also gonna make some spinach enhanced beef chili.
Hope it gets better soon cuz I feel like such an old geezer and my kids don't like to think I'm old.

Precient Quote Of The Day
"All of these articles about his boyhood in Indonesia and his life in Hawaii are geared towards showing his background is diverse, multicultural and putting that in a new light. Save it for 2050 ... I cannot imagine America electing a president during a time of war who is not at his center fundamentally American in his thinking and values. The right knows Obama is unelectable except against Attila the Hun."

Words are flying out like

They slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow waves of joy
are drifting thorough my open mind
Possessing and caressing me

Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which
dance before me like a million eyes
That call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a
restless wind inside a letter box
they tumble blindly as
they make their way across the universe

Jai guru deva om
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of life
are ringing through my open ears
exciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which
shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on across the universe

New MacBook
Apple dropped their prices so I bought a new 13.3" MacBook Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB, 160GB, SuperDrive - White Intel Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 2GB DDR2, 160GB SATA/100, Intel GMA X3100 graphics 144MB, 13" TFT 1280x800, Super Drive(DVD+-R/CD-RW), Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n WLAN, Bluetooth, OS X 10.5 Leopard
Yippie. Don't really feel rich these days and I'm not but as I said before, I think this MacBook is dying after 5 plus good years.
Figure $1200 divided by 5 = $240 per year. That's $20 a month which is less than a dollar a day.

Got the results from last weeks blood test: I'm still anemic but doc says no transfusion. Just keep popping iron supplements and eat red meat. Don't know why he doesn't want to give me some good blood. My blood sugar is also out of whack. Meanwhile I'm taking 20 pills a day and shooting insulin and still get tired so easily. Plus, I wake in the night with the most foul bitter taste in my mouth from one of these pills.
But who's complaining?

11/23/08
Irony?
I don't understand this national obsession with irony. It's become a cant word inserted inappropriately into endless columns and essay in MSM. Self-defined intellectuals love to write incomprehensible gibberish to make one say, "Huh?" Here's another one. Go HERE.
Last Night's Dinner
Made a great cream of vegetable soup. Here how: Saute in olive oil and butter, Salt & pepper, onions, grated carrots, leeks, endive, sliced potaoes and garlic until lightly caramalized. Add fresh baby spinch and let it wilt. Add chicken stock and braise. Add chopped mushroom, peas and any other veggies you like. Add celery seed and fennel seed. When veggies are all braised, turn off heat use and immersion blender to puree, leaving a few chunks of veggies. When blended, add a can of condensed milk. Turn the heat back on and simmer for a few minutes. I'm thinking fennel would also work well as an ingedient in the braise. Sprinkle a few bits of Sea Salt if you like and a drizzle of extra virgen olive oil is always good in soups. It's also good served cold. I usually add oyster crackers or Goldfish or serve with garlic bread.
That's it. You're welcome.
Amazing
I was able to walk out into the winter and go 4 blocks to the grocery store, buy and carry home 2 bags of groceries without having to sit down even once. Is there hope for me. Perhaps.

Weekends Suck
Just took Sparklers MacBook to Tek Serve for a ram upgrade. As usual the subway are all screwed up: the 1 is running on the express lane and the 2 is going local between Chambers & 14th Street. Plus the lady announcing the changes is working with the usual scratchy speakers such that you can't understand a word she says. On the way home a young girl say next to me. She had such bad breath that I had yo keep my head averted to the right. It was a sort of halitosis/ammonia tinge that made me nauseous. I finally opted to get and stand by the door for the duration.
Tek Serve was fast and efficient as usual and when I get home the internet is slow as molasses, dropping connections as usual on weekends.

Obama
It's been a few days now and I'm feeling a bit discombobulated. I feel we (my children and me) are finally in some good hands as far as our government is concerned. My children will all do the right thing; I'm convinced they have good values. But it's been so long since America has done so I've almost forgotten what we stand for.
Bill Clinton was OK in a governing sort way but his personal morality was needy to say the least. Not a great example for any of us. He continues in his own little world and Hillary would have been an extension of that. Thanks to the electorate for whittling her down and out.
Before Bill we had 16 years of mis-guided Reagan/Bush crapola. Carter was fine and still is but Teddy and the Dems did him dirty. Bad Dems. Ford cleaned up the mess left by Nixon so kudos to him.
It's been a long time and I'm just trying to chill out until some whacko comes along to disrupt everything.

The Election Was Fixed
There is a mentally deficient guy in nabe who I see often talking to himself at the market or stopping and backing up a few steps and talking to himself. He usually does not engage with anyone but over the years he has begun to recognize me and talk to me directly.
Yesterday he saw me at Jubilee, our gourmet store, and seeing my Obama button said, "That election was fixed."
Regretably, I knee-jerk reacted and said, "Fuck you." I was tired after 2 years of the campaign. Now, I wish I had engaged him and explored his take a bit. Too late.

Danny --
I'm about to head to Grant Park to talk to everyone gathered there, but I wanted to write to you first.
We just made history.
And I don't want you to forget how we did it.
You made history every single day during this campaign -- every day you knocked on doors, made a donation, or talked to your family, friends, and neighbors about why you believe it's time for change.
I want to thank all of you who gave your time, talent, and passion to this campaign.
We have a lot of work to do to get our country back on track, and I'll be in touch soon about what comes next.
But I want to be very clear about one thing...
All of this happened because of you.
Thank you,

I'm Gonna Say, Hot Damn
It's been so long since I've had a chance to feel good about America. Let's just wallow in it for a while. I'm happy and proud to say my home state of Iowa started it all for Obama and Minnesota fell into line. Only SD disappointed me.
Happy to say I don't have to listen anymore to pundits predictions. No more fear of election theft. All we have to fear now is some loon out there hatching a plot to overturn our will. Especially good that Obama's victory was so decisive and also that he will have clear majorities in both houses of congress.
No more fear of the next few Supreme Court nominees being Scalia clones and hope for more Souter clones. (Best thing Bush-41 did in his term of office.)
I couldn't sleep last night for some reason but it was ok cuz I could lay there and feel good about America. I could reflect on seeing Jesse Jackson in Grant Park crying and speculate about whether his were tears of joy or tears of envy. Go HERE.
I could marvel at what a wonderful family Obama has and that spectacular dress Michelle wore. Brother Daryl called near midnight and we could actually talk about something other than our comparative health issues. Sparkler's call came seconds after Obama broke through and she was so excited she could hardly speak. I told her she could vote for Obama's re-election in 4 years. Kate voted in Chicago and was partying there on her 20th birthday. Linda emailed me in response to my query about how she was doing, healthwise. She said she was feeling better now that Obama won Ohio. We went through a rough time together back in '72 waiting for McGovern to make some magic. That was a bad day. This is a good one.
Now I'm off to the grocery store to stock up on liver, beef, beets and spinach. Gotta lick this anemia.

Why are they so ugly (except for Dana Perino)? Here's Rick Davis in a last ditch pitch of denial. Go HERE.
I Rachel Maddow.
Go HERE if you do too.
Rabbi Moshe Cotel, 65, RIP
In 67-69 we knew Morris Cotel at the American Academy in Rome. He was a funny guy, not much given to frivolous activity and pot smoking like so many of his fellows. For his final concert he came out dressed in a tux with frizzy black hair looking like Harpo Marx. He proceeded to a blazing cacophonous piano solo, then got up and rushed away shyly without acknowledging the applause. Go HERE.
Little Mike Forced To Listen
Bloomberg has to listen to his constituents before he can sign the bill to buy himself another term. His Honor? My ass. Go HERE.
Undecideds (More)
David Sedaris from The New Yorker. Go HERE.
Today
One day to go. Liquid diet starts today and then tonight the laxatives begin. Nothing after midnight. In the morning I repeat the laxatives which means I can't go vote until the afternoon cuz I'll need to be near the commode.

Eeyore

Sparkler and her posse's costumes were characters from Winnie Ther Poo.
Fighting Anemia

Supposed to eat lots of liver, beef, beets and spinach. Thus I made my first quiche; spinach, mozzarella, eggs and tomatoes. Hope it tastes as good as it looks.

Poor Sap
John McCain supporter on the upper West Side. Go HERE.
Keith Olbermann
Keith is our Bill O'Reilly and I've always had mixed feelings about him. He's usually right on the issues but his stridency is off-putting. Ben Affleck does him well on SNL. Go HERE.
"My Friends"
The Musical starring John McCain. Go HERE.
Palin Punk'd

Summer Of Deliverance
Been reading the memoir Christopher Dickey wrote of his relationship with the poet/novelist James Dickey. Turns out it is really about a son's love/hate-filled life with a drunken asshole father (and drunken mother). By many standards, Dickey was a charming talented artist in a southern good ol' boy way. By another he was a domineeering, demon-filled, drunk; a user and a taker. Almost finished now and I'm left with no desire to read anything he's written. I did enjoy Deliverance when it first came out in the 70s and they also made a very good movie from it. Son Christopher, a novelist and journalist, also wrote a few books, one of which is called With The Contras which sounds good when he touches on it in this book.
Today
Thought my computer had died last night. I have it set to boot itself at 10:30am but this morning at 11am it hadn't booted. Realized that it had gone back to Standard time. I'm not a fan of DST. Also today the NYC Marathon is 1/2 over by now. Go HERE for a kewl panorama as the women come head up 1st Avenue.
It is 2 days until the election (and my endo-colonoscopy) and my Sparkler still doesn't want to hear about the possibility of Obama losing. Me neither.

"This is being done entirely as a gift to my fans. The only return any of us are hoping for is the largest turnout of young voters ever at the polls in November." - Michael Moore
I couldn't go to sleep last night and when I did get to sleep I dreamt I was awake. As usual a mantra kept repeating until I was nauseous: Vote, vote Obama and don't forget those nasty Props in CA and SD.
