Great Song
No Frontiers

If life is a river and your heart is a boat
And just like a water baby, baby born to float
And if life is a wild wind that blows way on high
Then your heart is Amelia dying to fly
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes

And if life is a bar room in which we must wait
'Round the man with his fingers on the ivory gates
Where we sing until dawn of our fears and our fates
And we stack all the deadmen in self addressed crates
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night

Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day
When fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its way
Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes

If your life is a rough bed of brambles and nails
And your spirit's a slave to man's whips and man's jails
Where you thirst and you hunger for justice and right
Then your heart is a pure flame of man's constant night
In your eyes faint as the singing of a lark
That somehow this black night
Feels warmer for the spark
Warmer for the spark
To hold us 'til the day when fear will lose its grip
And heaven has its way
And heaven has its way
When all will harmonise
And know what's in our hearts
The dream will realise

Heaven knows no frontiers
And I've seen heaven in your eyes
Heaven knows no frontiers And I've seen heaven in your eyes
-- Jimmy McCarthy

Radio is not playing the new Bruce despite it's #1 status. I've been comparing it to his best (The Rising, Nebraska, Tunnel Of Love, Born To Run, Seeger Sessions, etc.) Like Devils And Dust it doesn't quite hold up. Sorry Boss. We still love you.
Ditto to the new Ryan Adams. I've been comparing it to Demolition and even early Whiskeytown CDs and it seems a bit muddled.

Quote Of The Day
"Stephen Colbert claims to represent a new kind of politics, but today we see he's participating in the slash and burn politics that has no place in American discourse. The truthiness is, as the candidate of Doritos, Colbert's hands are stained by corporate corruption and nacho cheese. John Edwards has never taken a dime from salty food lobbyists and America deserves a President who isn't in the pocket of the snack food special interests."

Ryan Adams
He has a new EP CD, 7 songs for $6. So I decided to have an Adams day. All my kids love him and so do I. There is now so many CDs available and I have most of them but there is so much, (like with Dylan's catalog, or Neil Young, or Rollins or Monk, or Miles or countless others) I'm still missing a few starting with Whiskeytown, then the solo CDs and now with the Cardinals. So he'll make a few less than inspried ones but he'a already made a bunch that are among my faves: Demolition, Gold, Heartbreaker, Rock'n roll, Love Is Hell. I say crank them out Ryan. I can't absorb them all as fast as you seem able to produce them. But you seem destined to burn out. I say burn on.

Last Night
Shortly after going to bed, I got up to go to the bathroom. Either I stumbled or fainted briefly and banged my eye brow. In the few minutes it took to find and unravel a large band-aid, I mangaged to spill blood all over the floor, on my shorts. Cursing profusely about how impossible it is to unwrap a bandage in an emergency I went back to bed. In the morning I was shocked to see the damage. It looked like a murder had taken place, my pillow was bloody. My neck ached and my wrist was sore. So, I've been scrubbing and doing laundry all morning.

Blasts From The Past
I have this boyhood friend named Spencer Howard who then moved away and lived his life. He lives now a few miles from our home town. He also became a potter and a teacher, much like myself. Well we have re-connected and have now swapped emails, paintings and ceramics. I sent him a circular painting and he sent me some beautiful coffee mugs.
Today he sent me another box of beautiful plates and bowls. I wish he had a website so I could connect you to him. He donates all proceeds from his art to Christian causes. He tries to convert me but I don't take it seriously. He does have soul.

"Here is the reality. Iran has an economy the size of Finland's and an annual defense budget of around $4.8 billion. It has not invaded a country since the late 18th century. The United States has a GDP that is 68 times larger and defense expenditures that are 110 times greater. Israel and every Arab country (except Syria and Iraq) are quietly or actively allied against Iran. And yet we are to believe that Tehran is about to overturn the international system and replace it with an Islamo-fascist order? What planet are we on? "

Outing Gay Actors
Hypocritical gay politicians? I applaude that even if it is cruel to oblivious family members in denial. Ditto, Ike, LBJ and JFK and Gary Hart and WJC though their hypocritical stances and daliances were hetero.
But when gay actors are outed it destroys some of my fave films. So when I learned my boyhood idol Randolph Scott and Cary Grant shared a home for many years it ruined the art. And Montgomery Cliff a gay druggie drunk? James Dean bi-sexual? Sal Mineo, I sorta knew but I don't wanna hear it. I can deal with Troy Donahue and Rock Hudson and Tab Hunter since I never admired their movies anyway (and Tab once eyeballed me personally outside the Jeu dePaume so no big surprise). But if you tell me that Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy both swung both ways, or Garbo or Errol Flynn. Give it a rest. I don't wanna know. Charles Laughton? Well he's British and as someone once said, the British only screw twice a year. I've always assumed that Peter O'Toole was gay but perhaps not. As for Richardson, Olivier, Guilgud, who gives a damn.
Is it important that Leonardo and Michaelangelo, or Rauschenberg and Johns were, (are) all gay? Mapplethorp, Haring? Doh! Don't think so. But when Monty Clift sort of pathetically falls for Marilyn I'd sort of like to believe it.
Tell me that Arnold was rather notorious for locker room play or crude barroom assault and I'm all for the dissemination of information.
Deborah Kerr, 86, RIP
Many great films but my faves are the ones with John Huston: Night Of The Iguana with Richard Burton, Ava Gardner and Heaven Knows, Mr. Allison with Robert Mitchum.
Beautiful always and sexy in a modest way.

Quote Of The Day
"I sit on the terrace reading about the torments of Scott Fitzgerald. I am, he was, one of those men who read the grievous accounts of hard-drinking self-destructive authors, holding a glass of whiskey in our hands, the tears pouring down our cheeks. Thunder at three. The old dog trembles, and is so frightened that she vomits. The wind slams some doors within the house, and then I smell the rain, minutes before it begins to fall on my land. What I smell is the damp country churches, the back hallways of houses where I was contented and happy, privies, wet bathing suits-an odor, it seems of joy. When Fitzgerald drops dead, I burst into tears, as I wept over the account of Dylan Thomas's death. This morning I cannot remember anything that occurred after dinner."

The Congress has to act positively to stop The Shrub because so far he knows he has gotten away with anything he decides to do. He is the decider by his own estimation. And if anyone can not remember the run-up to the war with Iraq it is looking identical with the recent passage of Kyl/Lieberman.

The Boss Does The Beach Boys
Sorry to say that after a few days listening to Magic I'm less than impressed. It lacks the joy of The Seeger Sessions and the gravitas of The Rising. It's pumped as a "pop" album and indeed it is. The sound is muddy and Girls In Their Summer Clothes is pure Beach Boys, which is not a good thing. A couple good tracks: Magic which has the sound of a song from The Rising & Last To Die hold up well.
Caveat: Many of my favorite albums don't impress me at first.

Another Reason Why I Don't Keep A Gun In The House

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
He is barking the same high, rhythmic bark
that he barks every time they leave the house.
They must switch him on on their way out.

The neighbors' dog will not stop barking.
I close all the windows in the house
and put on a Beethoven symphony full blast
but I can still hear him muffled under the music,
barking, barking, barking,

and now I can see him sitting in the orchestra,
his head raised confidently as if Beethoven
had included a part for barking dog.

When the record finally ends he is still barking,
sitting there in the oboe section barking,
his eyes fixed on the conductor who is
entreating him with his baton

while the other musicians listen in respectful
silence to the famous barking dog solo,
that endless coda that first established
Beethoven as an innovative genius.

WlfSng Says...
After having dug to a depth of 10 meters last year, Scottish scientists found traces of copper wire dating back 100 years and came to 'the conclusion that their ancestors already had a telephone network more than 100 years ago.
Not to be outdone by the Scots, in the weeks that followed, British scientists dug to a depth of 20 meters, and shortly after, headlines in the UK newspapers read:   "British archaeologists have found traces of 200 year old copper wire and have concluded that their ancestors already had an advanced high-tech communications network a hundred years earlier than the Scots."
One week later, "The Daily Republic" a Mitchell, SD newspaper, reported the following: "After digging as deep as 30 meters in corn fields near Mitchell, Ole Johnson, a self taught archeologist, reported that he found absolutely nothing.  Ole has therefore concluded that 300 years ago  South Dakota had already gone wireless."

"The reality is, if we take a look at Bernard Kerik's service as police commissioner, he was an excellent police commissioner. Crime went down unexpectedly under Bernard Kerik.
Then on the other side of it, there were these problems. (*Felonies such as bribery, tax-fraud, obstruction of justice.) I take the responsibility. We should have known about them. We should have dealt with them. We didn't. It was my mistake. I made it. I am sorry for it. I've learned from it. But in the balance of things, you take a look at the success that I had, it must be that I am generally picking the right people. Because I am sure not doing this by myself."

About half way through this book by Robert Dallek and recommend it highly. It's hard to give these vile people so much attention since that, more than anything, is what they mostly wanted. Quote Of The Day
"Now the reason why the N.R.A. has lost all credibility is statements like that. By definition these are attack weapons. They are used for offense. It really is absolutely astounding that the N.R.A. continues to have influence in areas in which they make no sense at all."
