"Give her some time in the office and I think the answer would be, she will be [pause] adequate. I can't say that she would be a genius in the job. So, I'm Thinking
Unable to sleep, anxious over the coming election, I had this thought: At the end of his game, Bush has to be thinking, what if the Dems come after me and Tricky Dick Cheney? I have to pardon Scooter so I might as well do a blanket (Ford-like) pardon of Gonzo and Cheney and Rummie. Then I can resign a few days early and Cheney can pardon me. Cover our asses. It still leaves us vulnerable if we leave the U.S but who wants to do that?

Quote Of The Day
"This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity."

To try to make the excuse that she looks out her window and sees Russia--and that she's commander of the Alaska National Guard. Quote Of The Day
"Do I like Obama, personally? I do. Do I think he's got good policies? Look, I'm like everyone else, I hope so. They sound good. They sound like something I believe in, so I think based on his performance and the way that he has run his campaign, I feel that it is reasonable to feel confident that he is going to take the same discipline and smarts and lack of drama and apply them to the very serious issues today and I think that makes him a good choice for President. Do I think that his candidacy is historic? Sure, that's exciting too, but what I think it's really amazing that he exists in the same world that I also inhabit and no other political candidate lives in that world right now. They live in a made-up world that is not reality. I think that that's why you see Obama surging right now. It's that the people like the fact that Obama lives in the world that they live in."

There is no excuse for this. Pass the amendment. Put it back to the people. Anything less than that just goes to the heart of what people say about politicians. Q: Brandon Garcia wants to know, "What does the Vice President do?"
PALIN: Aw, that¹s something that Piper would ask me, as a second grader, also. That's a great question, Brandon, and a Vice President has a really great job, because no only are they there to support the President agenda, they're like a team member, the team mate to that President. But also, they're in charge of the United States Senate, so if they want to they can really get in there with the Senators and make a lot of good policy changes that will make life better for Brandon and his family and his classroom. And it's a great job and I look forward to having that job.

Actually got out of the house this afternoon. Went to Brooklyn to visit Tom Otterness's Studio where he was hosting two of his friend's work: Christoph Kohlhofer and Zadik Zadikian. Great to see the great strides Tom has made and his new studio is amazing. That's Robin Winters below talking to John Ahern.

Then I met Andrea Callard and we wandered the few blocks over to RomDog's studio where I've never been. The sky in Brooklyn is much more vivid with light than it is in Manahattan. My anemic geezerdom is still rampant and walking two blocks is very trying. Fred, Andrea and I exchanged geezer points (I won) and then I struggled home where I'm in the process of baking an acorn squash with brown sugar and butter. I also toasted the seeds and am enjoying a snack while the squash bakes. Here's RomDog.

As an old SDS member, who woulda thought that 40 years later Wm. Ayers would be the point man in a presidential campaign. But it seems that's all McCain has left. He could drag out Rev. Wright, I suppose, and I even wonder why he doesn't. (Sarah has her own "witch doctor" to explain.) Of course McCain also has his (time served felon) G. Gordon Liddy to explain if he wants to push this "domestic terrorist" theme.
Y'know what I think? I think McCain knows he's lost and he's merely hoping it won't be a landslide.

Today's Doctor
Here is how a Cardiolite Stress test goes. First you get an IV in the crook of your arm and some radioactive juice injected. Then you wait and read ourdated copies of New York Mag and Newsweek. After half an hour you go sit in a pivoting chair and get scoped for about 25 minutes. No movement allowed, arms up, head down. Then you go back to your magazines for an hour. Another room where a snotty nurse puts EKG electrodes all over your chest and a BP cuff on your free arm. Then 1st tech comes in an inject something else IV. Then the doctor comes in and injects something else gradually while being monitored EKG & BP for about 10 minutes. This is simulating walking on the treadmill since I don't have the energy to do so. You begin to feel shittier and shittier. In my case a headache. Then they inject an antidote to whatever they injected before. You are then allowed to go out and get coffee and breakfast. You come back in a half hour and get back on the pivoting chair for a repeat of step one. That's it. Elapsed time is about 4 hours. What you think of is: this will end in 18-16-14... minutes. But what if it didn't? This is the position of un-indicted prisoners. Will it ever end. All this to see what condition your arterial condition is in.
Next Monday I go in for Endoscopy and Colonoscopy to see if I have any internal bleeding that will explain my anemia. Meanwhile I'm drinking lots of beef broth, taking iron tablets and eating more meat than I'd like.

Tell Tale Signs
No, not the new Dylan CD. When Republicans, famed for staying the course with almost any other GOPper start abandoning ship and even hinting or not wanting to say for whom they will vote... you have to think: Are they just trying to trick us, Rove/Newt style, or is it a true sign. A partial list of apostate Reps who have abandoned McCain's campaign would include: Chistopher (son of Bill) Buckley, George Will, Kathleen Parker, Christopher Hitchens, Andrew Sullivan, Joe Klein... Even David Brooks and Wm. Kristol are hedging their bets to retain some sort of face-saving objectivity. It goes on and I'm starting to feel good about this and even fantasizing a fillibuster-proof Senate. Who woulda thunk it?

Had dream recently wherein I met and fell in love with one of Newmans' daughters. Turns out she was a twin and she and her sister were soon to be off to Europe for a ten-day vacation. In the meantime she agreed to spend some romantic time with me, eating at great Italian restaurants. So it goes... I told her how much and how many people loved her father, both as an actor and a man. She said, "Really?" as if she'd never herard that before. I told her TCM was running a Newman Fest last weekend and I was TiVoing a bunch of my faves and some I'd never seen. Really nice dream.
So last night I watched Hud, one of my all time fave movies and it held up great. Then I tried for a double feature with Torn Curtain by Hitchcock. I don't recall ever seeing it and I didn't last long. I'm constantly reminded of just how awful a filmaker Hitchcock is. I bailed after 20 minutes. Even Newman couldn't save it.
Tonight I'll try Sweet Bird Of Youth with Geraldine Page.

Yippie! Add another specialist to my list: Cardiologist, Pacemaker surgeon, Othamologist, Endocrinologist, Urologist and now Gatroenterologist. Plus a few others now and then. Enough is sufficient.

1 Of McCain's Wisemen
John Lewis (D-GA), famed 60's Civil Rights activists was earlier named one of three wisemen McCain would consult if elected. Lewis said, in response, that he's seldom spoken to McCain over the years. Now he's criticizing McCain's inflamatory campaign tactics and comparing him to George Wallace. McCain is now incensed and demands that Obama repudiate Lewis. Ain't that a bitch?

Wound up in E.R @ NYU Hospital last night feeling lousy as I mentioned. Thought maybe I was having a silent heart attack. Got there at 6pm and @ 9pm was still waiting to see a Doctor. They gave me an EKG which tells nothing since I have a Pacemaker. They took blood and then a chest x-ray. About 10:30 blood results came back OK for heart enzymes but turns out I am anemic. Got to go home about 11pm feeling relieved if not better. Had some beef broth for breakfast and a burger for lunch. Stocked up on more red meat and broth and bought some vitamins and an iron supplement. Still feel lousy and no energy but will follow up with my cardio guy on Monday except he is in Israel until the end of the month. So it goes...

The Meltdown
Every day it gets better and better. Yet there is the abiding fear that the stupid America (the America that re-elected Nixon) will find a way to be self-destructive and turn the tide to an old bitter frustrated war "hero" and a runner-up Miss Alaska with the mentality of a red-neck cocktail waitress. I'll believe it on November 5th when McCain/Palin lose in a landslide. If Obama squeaks by we will know that racism is still entrenched. If McCain squeaks in we will know that America is still deeply racist.
That's my opinion for the day and I'll stick with it here on the Straight Talk Express.

Debate Night
The building tenants had scheduled a dinner party last night so it was sporadic watching. I discovered I've reached the point where I know everything both Obama and McCain will say so it got quite boring and I skipped much of it.
Dinner started with drinks on landlord Marco & Rebecca's 5th floor. The place has high ceilings and white and gorgeous and the drinks were tempting but I settled for sparkling water. We moved then to 4th floor for hors d'oeuvre at Ariane & Max's loft and Will's office. Max was doing a music video shoot so he couldn't come. Figs & Fresh ricotta with honey was delicious. Also a mixed veggie salad from Will & companion.
We moved to my place (crammed and un-designed art warehouse compared to all the other lofts) for baked lasagna & green salad. Marco supplied the wines and again I was tempted knowing he would pick some good ones since he owns the wine store on 1st floor. I turned on the debate but few were interested. I was disappointed in my lasagna but others seemed to eat it and compliment, so...
We moved to 2nd floor for dessert & coffee. Stuart & Jane and Robert & Teresa made 4 delicious pies: A Texas coconut, a pecan and two apple pies. I had some of the coconut and apple and called it quits. I could feel my blood sugar screaming. Stuart and Jane's loft is almost as crammed with art as mine except theirs are mostly bought. They have a Mose Toliver which I envied and they said someone left it behind at their last residence.
All had a good time and I retired to catch the final 15 minutes of the debate which it seems Obama "won".

PBS has an online poll posted asking if Sarah Palin is qualified. Apparently the Republicans knew about this in advance and are flooding the voting with YES votes. I know -- it's only a poll. But it will be reported on PBS, picked up by mainstream media and can influence undecided voters in swing states.
Please do two things -- takes 20 seconds.
1) Click on link and vote yourself. Go HERE.
2) Then send this to every single Obama-Biden voter you know, and urge them to vote and pass it on.
The last thing we need is PBS having to say our viewers think Sarah Palin is qualified.
Please note that you can only vote once from the same computer; subsequent votes from that computer will not be counted.

My Holiday with McCain
By ANASUYA DUBEY

It was just before John McCain's last run at the presidential nomination in 2000 that my husband and I vacationed in Turtle Island in Fiji with John McCain, Cindy, and their children, including Bridget (their adopted Bangladeshi child).

It was not our intention, but it was our misfortune to be in close quarters with John McCain for almost a week since Turtle Island has a small number of  bungalows and their focus on communal meals force all vacationers who are there at the same time to get to know each other intimately.

He arrived at our first group meal and started reading  quotes from a pile of  William Faulkner books with a forest of Post-Its sticking out of them. As an English Literature major myself, my first thought was "if he likes this so much, why hasn't he memorized any of this yet?" I soon realized that McCain actually thought we had come on vacation to be a volunteer audience for his "readings" which then became a regular part of each meal. Out of politeness, none of the vacationers initially protested at this intrusion into their blissful holiday, but people's buttons definitely got pushed as the readings continued day after day.

Unfortunately this was not his only contribution to our mealtime entertainment. He waxed on during one meal about how Indo-Chinese women had the best figures and that our American corn-fed women just couldn't meet up to this standard. He also made it a point that all of us should stop Cindy from having dessert as her weight was too high and made a few comments to Amy, the 25 year old wife of the honeymooning couple from Nebraska that she should eat less as she needed to lose weight.

McCain's appreciation of the beauty of Asian women was so great that David the American economist had to move his Thai wife to the other side of the table from McCain as McCain kept aggressively flirting with and touching her.

Needless to say I was irritated at his large ego, and his rude behavior towards his wife and other women, but decided he must have some redeeming qualities as he had adopted a handicapped child from Bangladesh . I asked him about this one day and his response was shocking -"Oh, that was Cindy's idea - I didn't have anything to do with it. She just went and adopted this thing without even asking me. You can't imagine how people stare when I wheel this ugly, black thing around in a shopping cart in Arizona . No, it wasn't my idea at all."

I actively avoided McCain after that, but unfortunately one day he engaged me in a political discussion which soon got us on the topic of the active US bombing of Iraq at that time. I was shocked when he said "if I was incharge, I would nuke Iraq to teach them a lesson". Given McCain's personal experience with the horrors of war I had expected a more balanced point of view. I commented on the tragic consequences of the nuclear attacks on Japan during WWII - but no, he was not to be dissuaded. He went on to say that if it was up to him he would have dropped many more nuclear bombs on Japan. I rapidly extricated myself from this conversation as I could tell that his experience being tortured as a POW didn't seem to have mellowed out his perspective but rather had made him more aggressive, and vengeful towards the world.

My final encounter with McCain was on the morning that he was leaving Turtle Island . Amy and I were happily eating pancakes when McCain arrived and told Amy that she shouldn't be having pancakes because she needed to lose weight. Amy burst into tears at this abusive comment. I felt fiercely protective of Amy and immediately turned to McCain and told him to leave her alone. He became very angry and abusive towards me, and said "don't you know who I am" and I looked him in the face and said "yes, you are the biggest asshole I have ever met" and headed back to my cabin. I am happy to say that later that day when I arrived at lunch I was given a standing ovation by all the guests for having stood up to McCain's bullying.

Although I have shared my McCain story informally with friends, this is the  first time I am making this public. I almost did so in 2000, when McCain first announced his bid for the Republican nomination but it soon became apparent that George Bush was the shoo-in candidate and so I did not act then. However, now that there is a very real possibility that McCain could be elected as our next president, I feel it is my duty as an American citizen to share this story. I can't imagine a more scary outcome for America than that this abusive, aggressive man should lead our nation. I have observed him in intimate surroundings as he really is, not how the media portrays him to be. If his attitudes toward women, and his treatment of his own family are even a small indicator of his real personality, then I shudder to think what will happen to America were he to be elected as our President.

I must say I agree. Some of us who tried to end the Vietnam War still like to think we ended it. We didn't. It went on and on even after Vietnamization. It died of its own impotence. We should all have done more. As we now have to in Iraq and Afghanistan and Iran and Pakistan. Stop the madness. Kill bin Laden (and get some "closure") or we will see Camo-frocked, machine-gun toting soldiers in Penn Station for the rest of our grand-children's lives.
