OMG
Not on the TODAY Show
After Clarence Clemons played the sax intro for the song, and as the band vamped in the background, The Boss opened with some lighthearted banter and NBC-centric jokes and then got serious:
"This is a song called Livin' In the Future.  But it's really about what's happening now.  Right now. It's kind of about how the things we love about America, cheeseburgers, French fries, the Yankees battlin' Boston... the Bill of Rights [holds up microphone, urging crowd to cheer] ... v-twin motorcycles... Tim Russert's haircut, trans-fats and the Jersey Shore... we love those things the way womenfolk love Matt Lauer. But over the past six years we've had to add to the American picture: rendition, illegal wiretapping, voter suppression, no habeus corpus, the neglect of that great city New Orleans and its people, an attack on the Constitution.  And the loss of our best men and women in a tragic war.
This is a song about things that shouldn't happen here happening here. So right now we plan to do something about it, we plan to sing about it. I know it's early, but it's late. So come and join us."

Maddie 1 - RIP
Emma's little gold fish, who soon became mine, turned belly up last night. She was a rigtheous little carp.
Steve Earle
Ran into music fanatic Larry B. outside; I expected he would be there. Steve's recent bride, Allison Moorer, opened with a solo accoustic set. She's gorgous and has a nice voice but not too exciting. She did do a nice cover of Clouds then Steve joined her for Where Have All the Flowers Gone?. He's in a Seeger state of mind these days. His later song Lay This Hammer Down is a tribute to Pete.
Steve's set was mostly an accoustic tour through his repertoire but I was hoping for Guitar Town. Then he was joined by a guy on a synth board for some of his newest stuff which was pretty damn exciting. Have to check out his new one. Washington Square Serenade (DIG)
Downside was a woman in front of me wearing a gallon of sickly fruity perfume. And on the way up there was a compulsive taker on the Fulton St. plaform who I should have known to avoid but didn't. She talked non-stop from Fulton to 42nd street with her friend doing the occasional nod. Luckily it was in Spanish so I didn't have to determine if it was at all interesting.
Two of my pet peeves: People who don't know that perfume is an intimate affair and people who cannot shut up.
Still, I'd go again anytime.

"Last night, my friend and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependent on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."
"She got up, unplugged the TV, and threw out my wine. She's such a bitch."

MacDries says, "My brother Dennis and his nephew Steve have a similar pact. It states that should either of them get into dire straits, they will go pheasant hunting and have an accident. I signed on to that with Dennis, younger by 4 years. Problem is I haven't had a gun since 1960 or so. And it leaves Dennis hanging."

Experience
When George Bush first ran for President he listed his credentials as 1 term Governor (which was a part time job) part owner of the Texas Rangers baseball team and a loving husband and father.

MacDries says, "But he didn't mention he was the son of a former one-term POTUS and a C student at Yale.

The shopping mall at the South Street Seaport will probably be razed to make way for a retail, residential, and open-space development. A spokeswoman for the property's leaseholder tells AM New York that the three-story Pier 17 shopping mall will likely be demolished. Another person familiar with General Growth Properties' plan tells the paper they're considering a tall building for the site, a ferry landing, and relocating the landmark Tin Building at the former Fulton Fish Market. The rest of the pier would be left as open space. The plans will be discussed for the first time on Monday when General Growth meets with Community Board 1.

OK
I'm gonna get tons of shit for this (well not tons since I don't have a huge audience anymore) but here goes:
The Vows section of the New York Times has always been the silliest of all "news" items. Right up there with the worst dressed lists. And now that it is a feature of the video section on NYTimes.com it reveals even deeper silliness. Everyone knows that the large majority of marriages end in divorce so the rush of gays to get "married" is sweet but my cynical side is ROTFL. (Witness Andrew Sullivan's recent blissfull reporting on The Daily Dish. This Sunday we see Jeffrey & Matthew gleefully recounting their history in video. I'm waiting to see who will be the first gay couple to get "divorced".
I truly admire any person who makes those vows and keeps them. However, I am always reminded of a few acquaintances of mine who baptized their kids into one or another faith, "just in case".
I repeat my take on the issue: A marriage license is a document issued by the state that establishes legal rights and responsibilities to "anyone" entering into it as well as anyone born into that union. Marriage in a church is regulated by the precepts of each religion. If you don't like the precepts then you are not a believer.
I was married twice and meant it both times. My wives obviously did not. My most recent wife explains: "People change."

I have this friend, Brian Leo who is a scultptor, poet, craftsman, who makes a living reproducing bronze arftifacts. We have been corresponding since art school, 42 years ago and it's always a treat to get one of his rambling stream of conciousness packets. Some contain drawings and graphs of his brain along with poems, annotations on the margins and pages misplaced in order. I can't imagine he writes similar letters to many others and I have no idea why I was chosen, but I do love getting his reports.

The Edge Of Darkness
Found a copy of this great British mini-series on VHS from the Video Room. At 6 hours or so it ranks with me as one of the best movies ever made. Sound track ny Eric Clapton, featured song Time Of The Preacher by Willie Nelson, great character actors including Joe Don Baker and Zoe Wanamaker. I had an old copy I taped in 1986 but I watched it so many times it was deteriorating.
So I watched the first half last night and it still holds up. I'd try to find it if I were you. There are PAL versions on Amazon but they won't play on US players.
Achtung!
This from Andrew Sullivan's blog: The Daily Dish
As you noted, the President's presentation last night was surprisingly disjointed for "a major policy address" - at one point his verbal tone and eye movements prompted my impression that the teleprompter had malfunctioned. What came to mind was a line I remembered from the late, great Hunter Thompson's classic Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72.  In describing the doomed tone of Ed Muskie as his campaign unraveled, Thompson wrote that Muskie
"talked like a farmer with terminal cancer trying to borrow money on next year's crop."

Pre-surgical testing is done quicker than the 3 hours predicted. I'm sure you've met people you despise instantly, those whose neuroses spew forth like pus. But how often do you meet someone you like immediately and find yourself admiring her (or his) every move. Estrella was my Pre-surgical nurse and she was one. Straight forward, cool, all business and quite gorgeous. Not perfect but the sort of beauty that only grows on you. Full disclosure: I've spent a lot of time around nurses, having worked in hospitals and old folks homes for 3-4 years as a student and I do have a soft spot for nurses. There was one evil god damn nurse, however on night shift when I was recuperating from my bi-pass who I was determined to expose in a memoir. Unfortunately I was jacked up on self-administered morphine at the time and all the memories have been erased. The slate is clean.

"Sure they can. I've had a few women who have asked me politely if I were gay because I did not pick up on them. I don't mind, I just tell them I have ED and women have abused me too often.
But I have a semi-retard 50 year old fat guy who lives in South Bridge with his semi-retard parents and whenever he is out cruising alone and I see him coming he begins to target me and walks close enough for him to bump me and I can smell he is not clean.
I've yelled at him and once I bumped him back enough to drop him. He continues.
The other day I saw him coming and politely stopped flat, waiting for him to approach. He changed direction and scurried away."

MacDries says. "Had it been Johnny Depp approaching, who knows what might have happened."
Anna Chakvedatze

Not Maria makes it to the semi-finals agains fellow Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova who won Wimbledon 2007. Should be good.

Very slow today. Don't know why. Maybe it's getting too big for its britches.

Perfect
The reason I like tennis so much is because of guys like Federer. Perfect tennis body, like Sampras, lives a clean life, seems gracious and intelligent. If perhaps obsessed.
An artist can appreciate obsession. I always liked McEnroe and disliked Connors. Borg was awesome. Willander and Lendl too but not so likeable. I loved Martina N and didn't like Martina H. I admired Steffie Graf, though cold and Agassi was amazing to watch. I thought it was perfect they found each other. I predict one of their spawn will either be Number 1 or a drug addict.
But back to Federer who everyone predicts will be the best of all time. Who cares about all time? He's as good as you can be. I like looking at his body but in a different way than Maria Sharapova. He is intelligent and speaks 3-4 languages. Conners? McEnroe? How many do you guys stumble through.
I also like the non-violent aspect of Tennis and the fact that there is always a clear Numero Uno in the world. Federer is that man these past few years. Nadal on clay? OK. One will fade and a new one will advance. I'd say Steffie and Martina on the womens side. Federer. You'da man.
Senility
As I mentioned, Kate gave me Scorcese's No Direction Home for my b-day and I was certain that I had seen it. Last night I watched the first disk and didn't recall much of anything though it was great to see. Brain damage? Perhaps.
Tonight I will watch the 2nd disk to check myself out.
I know I saw Heart Of Gold.

Not Maria

But now that she's out, I give you Ana Ivanovic for aesthetic pleasure. 19 years old from Serbia. There are 2 other "ovics" still competing. One male, the other female.
Whoops! Venus whipped her in 2 sets. But damn ain't she purty. You'd prefer Nalbadian perhaps.
And man am I getting sick of that damn bug selling allergy spray and McEnroe selling his AmEx Card. John Boy is an attractive post career, second career athlete, but subject to burnout. verbum sap.
Grandpa Grupp
6th grandchild arrived on 8-31. Kai Ekstrom. Father Brad. Mother Saskia. Pix to come, I assume. Kai missed my birthday by 3 days and Carl's by 11. Carl has the unfortunate date of 9-11.
