Conceived in a motel in St. Joseph, MO on December 29, 1969, (don't ask how I know this) our child was due on September 23rd, 1970. When Linda and I visited her doctor for her weekly appointment that late day, the fill-in Doc took one look at Linda's girth and said, "Uh oh! Let's take a picture." He did and there were two beautiful little yin-yang spines and skulls on the x-ray. I had meant to get a copy of the x-ray but never did. We had ordered one but were pleased as punch to accept the bonus. All we needed to buy was a double stroller. They had built in friends to entertain each other. Comes the day a week later, early 6am, and we're all prepared, in hospital in St. Louis, MO. I was supposed to be in attendence for the birth which was not totally customary in those days. Doc says, "This may be a while, you might as well get some coffee." I was grateful, did so and and came back at 6:30am to discover Aaron & Gretchen had arrived 10 minutes apart at 6:10 & 6:20. I don't recall who came first and I've never bothered to look it up. I still think the Doc knew better and was not a big fan of fathers in the delivery room. Here is a drawing, Gretchen did when she was 3 years old. When she did the drawing and showed it to me, I said, "What is that?" Gretchen said, "Me and Aaron." Gretchen on the left and Aaron on the right and believe me I can tell. Still one of the best works of art I've ever seen.

	9/28/08 Quotidian Stop saying that! I always have to look it up. Paul Newman, Mentsch I've been crying off and on today, reading all the tributes to Paul Newman. I can't stop looking at the slide shows. I recently anticipated that this would occur when Pete Seeger dies but Newman caught me off guard. I've seen most of his movies and some dozens of times: Hud, Cool Hand Luke, Somebody Up There Likes Me, The Sting, Slap Shot, The Hustler, The Color Of Money, and the list goes on. I once attended the Horse Show at Madison Square Garden and walked into the mens's room to drain the mainline. There was only one stall open and on the left stood Paul Newman doing his business as well. I hesitated, then because I felt an urgency, I filled in the empty stall. I could sense he was a couple inches shorter than me in height though I did not glance to see how we compared elsewhere. He left first and when I finished and went back to my seat, I spotted him again seated nearby with his wife Joanne Woodward. I then noticed in the program than one of his daughters was riding in the competition of 5-gaited horses. I also always buy his Newnan's Own products and will continue to do so. We mostly know that we have been spending huge amounts of money, borrowing from the Chinese to pay the Arabs for their oil. We also know when we are buying stuff on credit cards. What no one seems to realize is that can only go on for so long and then it comes crashing down. That's where we are. It has crashed. Problem is: No one seems to remember the last time it crashed. 	9/19/08 Fall Arrives There are few leaves in my neighborhood so the first sign of Fall is when it gets cool enough that I have to close the front windows cuz the breeze is too cool. The 1st benefit is: it is so much quieter I hear things in familiar tunes that I hadn't heard in a while. Baking some acorn squash with butter and brown sugar tonight. Sweet corn and tomatoes are almost gone for the year. Time to get out some long pants. I'm still liking her but I have to recognize that she stayed silent and let John keep running even after she know it could blow up any minute and thus, if John had won the nomination or the VP spot, it could have guaranteed McCain the Presidency. Bad decisions are made by good people. I still wish John and Elizabeth well but... A war we lost. He was not a hero in the traditional sense, he was shot down and held prisoner for 5-6 years which is not a small thing. But he had a history of crashing his plane more than once. His father and grandfather were both Admirals in the navy but he didn't make it that far. All we need is another son trying to best his father. His Naval Academy record shows, he is just not that bright and tends to cut corners. Now, as the campaign gets more and more difficult we can also see he is a man of no principles and zero solid programs. He has been running for President since 1999. almost as long as Harold Stassen (remember him?) He will now say and do anything to get elected and people are beginning to catch on. If they were they would not consistantly vote against their own interests. They spout MSM talking points as if they are facts. This also explains why they felt as if they could enjoy a beer with Bush but not Kerry. Bush & McCain like to think they are funny and so do most people. Kerry was way too serious and didn't seem to have a sense of humor. Not that there was or is really anything to laugh about these days. 2. McCain has painted himself as a maverick and the MSM has bought into it. Most people like to think they too are mavericks. In fact McCain can not remember where he stands on most issues and thus contradicts himself every other day depending on to whom he is speaking. He has no grounding principles; he says he is a Christian but I've yet to see him in a photo op coming out of church. He says he is a fiscal conservative yet is not concerned that his Republicans are the party of over-whelming deficit spending. He believes in trickle-down Reaganomics but doesn't need to worry or wait for his bit to trickle-down; he has got his. His and a few hundred other peoples. 3. Obama on the other hand, we all know, is smarter than most of us which threatens some people. He also seems to have a sense of humor and enjoys what he is doing, loves his family and seems sincere in his faith. How many of us, religious or atheists can say as much? I will be happy happy when November 4th rolls around and I can stop thinking about people like McBush & Cheney, McCain & Sarah Barracuda.
